Evaluate the shear strength of tack coat between lifts of asphalt using this fixture.
Research prompted by highway agency interest in tack coat shear strength influenced Pine’s Tack Coat Bond Strength Test Fixture.
Pine’s Tack Coat Bond Strength Test Fixture accommodates 2″, 3″ 4″, and 6″ diameter specimens. These specimens can be gyratory and Marshall specimens as well as roadway cores.
The basic fixture accommodates a 6″ specimen. However, a proper test requires alignment of the specimen’s shear plane with the fixture’s shear gap. To accomplish the necessary alignment, Pine’s Kit for 5.5″- 6″ Specimens provides shims and bolts to fix a specimen into position.
Testing Smaller Specimens
- Smaller specimens require less material and leave smaller holes to patch. When testing specimens that are less than 5.5″ in diameter, reduce the bore of the fixture from 6″ to 4″ using the sleeves in Pine’s Kit for 3.5″ – 4″ Specimens. Then, fix a specimen into position using the shims and bolts provided with the kit. Replacement shims and bolts are available.
- Testing 2″ or 3″ diameter specimens requires using Pine’s sleeves for reducing the fixture’s diameter.
Applying a Force Normal to the Shear Plane
Apply a force normal to the the shear plane using Pine’s Normal Force Kit. The kit provides a calibrated force of 0 to approximately 100 pounds.
NOTE: This fixture fits the Pine AF850T and AF850TD Test Presses.
